Start in a Welsh market town. Finish beside a great stone dam. Between the two, take the quieter roads through Mid Wales, drive green lanes and watch the landscape change as you head towards the Elan Valley.

That’s the idea behind Llandovery to Elan Valley Adventure Pack 003. It’s an approximately 81-mile / 130 km self-guided 4×4 journey designed to give you a complete day out in your own vehicle.

The journey: Llandovery to Caban Coch Dam

Adventure 003 starts at Castle Car Park in Llandovery. From there, the route heads towards Myddfai, where an early green lane introduces rocky ground and water. It then travels beside the Sennybridge Training Area before continuing across the quieter roads and countryside of Mid Wales.

A suggested pause near Llandrindod Wells Lake gives you a chance to have lunch and break up the journey. Afterwards, you head towards Rhayader and another rocky green-lane section.

The final part of the day takes you into the Elan Valley, passing the scenery around Craig Goch, Pen y Garreg and Garreg Ddu dams before finishing at Caban Coch Dam. It’s a fitting end to a route that changes character throughout the day.

A varied day behind the wheel

This route is rated 2/5 — easy to moderate challenge. It combines green lanes with rural roads and places worth stopping to see. The driving has variety, including rocky sections, but there’s also time to enjoy the countryside rather than concentrating on difficult terrain all day.

The rating is a guide, not a promise of how a lane will feel when you arrive. Rain, water levels and changes to the ground can make a section more demanding. Adventure 003 is intended for drivers with some green-laning experience who can navigate independently and judge whether conditions suit their vehicle.

Bring a capable, road-legal 4×4 with suitable tyres and good ground clearance. Low range is recommended for the rocky sections.

Adventure 003 is a full-day, point-to-point route. Plan your onward journey from Caban Coch Dam before you set off, and leave enough daylight for breaks, photographs and changing conditions.

There’s plenty to enjoy along the way, but the finish deserves time of its own. The dams and reservoir scenery make the last miles feel like a destination rather than simply the end of a GPX track.

Check before you drive

Check the latest route updates for Adventure 003 shortly before travelling. Also check current restrictions, signs, weather, water levels and ground conditions. Follow all signs, red flags, barriers and no-stopping instructions beside the Sennybridge Training Area.

A GPX file and Roadbook help you navigate; they cannot guarantee that every section is open or suitable on the day. If a lane is closed, access is uncertain or conditions exceed your ability or vehicle’s capability, turn back.

From the Elan Valley to Cader Idris

Adventure Pack 002 (CM26-001) follows a 76-mile / 123 km point-to-point route. It starts at Elan Oaks in the Elan Valley and finishes at Cwmrhwyddfor Campsite near Cader Idris.

The point-to-point format is part of its appeal. The scenery changes as you travel north: reservoir country gives way to upland roads, green lanes and views across the heart of Wales. The route passes through historic mining landscapes and towards Nant-y-Moch before continuing to its finish beneath the mountain.

You’re free to stop for photographs, take a break or spend longer somewhere that catches your eye. There’s no convoy schedule to follow; the day is yours.

Who is this Adventure for?

Adventure 002 is rated Level 3 and is intended for drivers with some previous green-lane experience. It calls for a capable, road-legal 4×4, suitable all-terrain tyres and good ground clearance. Low range is recommended.

Depending on conditions, you may encounter uneven or rocky surfaces, inclines, gates and sections that require careful wheel placement. Rain can change the difficulty of a lane considerably, so the right decision on one day may be to leave a section for another time.

If you’re unsure about your vehicle, your experience or the conditions ahead, pause and assess them before continuing.

Plan for a full day, not just the mileage

Seventy-six miles might sound like a straightforward distance on a normal road trip. Here, the appeal is in slowing down and experiencing the journey.

Before leaving, download your GPX file and any maps you need for offline use. Read the Digital Roadbook and Adventure Guide so you understand the route and have time to plan your stops. As this is a point-to-point Adventure, think about where you’ll stay or how you’ll travel onward after reaching the finish.

Allow enough daylight for the drive, breaks and unexpected delays. Remote country is best enjoyed without a race against the clock.

Strata Florida is one of the names that comes up again and again when 4×4 drivers talk about green laning in Wales. It’s easy to see why: the journey takes you into the remote Cambrian Mountains, where the landscape, weather and driving conditions can all change during a single day.

But a memorable day around Strata Florida takes more planning than finding the lane on a map. Where else will you go? What should you check before leaving? And how do you make the journey worthwhile without rushing from one green lane to the next?

Here’s how I approach it.

Make a day of the journey

The Strata Florida green lane is a highlight, but it’s only part of what makes this area special. There are quiet roads, open views, historic places and long stretches of Mid Wales countryside to enjoy along the way.

That’s why I created Strata Florida Adventure Pack 001 (SF26-001) as a 75-mile circular, self-guided 4×4 adventure. It brings together the Old Coach Road, Strata Florida and the surrounding landscape in a full day’s route for experienced drivers travelling in their own 4×4.

You can stop for photographs, spend time at places that catch your interest and travel at a pace that suits your group. The aim is to enjoy the whole journey, not simply tick off a famous lane.

Five checks before you set off

1. Check current access

A GPX file or an account of someone else’s drive cannot tell you whether a section is open today. Check current restrictions and closures, read signs on the ground and stay on the legally available route.

If access is closed or uncertain, turn around. Don’t drive around a barrier or across adjoining land to complete the route.

2. Look at the weather and water levels

Recent rain can make a considerable difference to surfaces and water crossings. Conditions you’ve seen in a summer photograph may bear little resemblance to what you find on the day.

Be prepared to postpone a section if water levels or ground conditions are beyond your vehicle or experience.

3. Be honest about your vehicle and experience

Adventure 001 is intended for experienced drivers in capable, road-legal 4×4 vehicles. Suitable tyres, good ground clearance and low range are important considerations. Vehicle specification matters, but so do driving judgment and the ability to recognise when to turn back.

4. Allow a full day

The 75 miles include scenic road travel as well as green lanes. Give yourself time for navigation, breaks, photographs and changing conditions. Trying to fit the Adventure into a short afternoon takes away much of the pleasure of exploring Mid Wales.

5. Have the route information to hand

Download your navigation files before travelling and make sure you can use them where mobile coverage is limited. Read the Adventure Guide and Digital Roadbook before departure so that you know what to expect along the way.

Adventure 003: Llandovery to Elan Valley

LE26-001 is an approximately 81-mile journey from Llandovery to Caban Coch Dam in the Elan Valley. Allow around 6–8 hours including stops for this full-day, non-circular adventure.

The drive begins with a rocky lane near Myddfai, travels through remote country beside the Sennybridge Training Area and crosses Mid Wales before reaching a final green lane near Rhayader. From there, a scenic drive leads to Caban Coch Dam. Its stated experience level is 2/5: easy to moderate challenge.

Which Adventure Pack should you choose?

If you want a circular route with Strata Florida as a highlight, start with Adventure 001. For a day centred on Cambrian Mountain scenery, look at Adventure 002. If you would prefer a point-to-point journey finishing in the Elan Valley, choose Adventure 003.

This is the option I’d recommend for anyone travelling some distance to explore Mid Wales. Rather than driving to Wales for a single route, you can turn the trip into a genuine two-day 4×4 Adventure.

What sort of 4×4 do I need?

These Adventures are intended for capable, properly maintained and road-legal 4×4 vehicles.

Suitable vehicles could include models such as the INEOS Grenadier, Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and similarly capable vehicles, subject to specification and current route conditions.

Low range is recommended.

Vehicle capability alone isn’t enough, though. Driver experience, tyres, weather, water levels and ground conditions can make a considerable difference.

Green laning responsibly in Wales

Green lanes are public highways, not closed off-road courses.

That distinction is important.

Conditions and legal access can change, and the Roadbook itself makes clear that routes may pass through remote areas, that hazards are not all identified and that signs and current restrictions must always take precedence over the supplied navigation. 

Before starting any Adventure, check:

• the latest 4×4 Wales Route Status;
• current Traffic Regulation Orders and closures;
• signs and restrictions on the ground;
• weather and water levels;
• your vehicle’s condition and suitability;
• your own experience and ability.

If a route is closed, restricted, unsafe, private or uncertain, do not continue.
