THE ADVENTURE
Start at Castle Car Park in Llandovery and head towards Myddfai, where an early green lane brings a rocky climb and water. The route then passes beside the Sennybridge Training Area before crossing the quieter roads and open countryside of Mid Wales.
A planned stop near Llandrindod Wells Lake offers time for lunch. From there, continue towards Rhayader and another rocky green-lane section before the landscape opens into the Elan Valley.
The final drive passes Craig Goch, Pen y Garreg and Garreg Ddu dams, finishing at Caban Coch. Allow a full day to enjoy the journey and assess conditions as you go.

CREATED BY 4×4 WALES
I’ve spent over 35 years exploring Wales by 4×4. Adventure 003 brings that experience together into a complete self-guided journey — from the first rocky lane near Llandovery to the reservoir scenery of the Elan Valley.
I’ve planned the route and its stops to give you a varied day behind the wheel, with the GPX, Roadbook and Adventure Guide working together as you travel.

IS MY 4×4 SUITABLE?
Adventure 003 requires a capable, road-legal 4×4 with suitable tyres and good ground clearance. Low range is recommended for the rocky sections.
Vehicles that may be suitable include the Land Rover Defender, INEOS Grenadier and Toyota Land Cruiser, together with suitably equipped pickups such as the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max. IMPORTANT ROUTE INFORMATION
Green lanes are public highways, not closed courses. Legal status and conditions can change. This route also passes beside the Sennybridge Training Area: obey all signs, red flags, barriers, closures and no-stopping instructions.
Before travelling, check the latest LE26-001 Route Status, Traffic Regulation Orders and closures, signage, weather, water levels and ground conditions.
The supplied GPX provides navigation information and does not guarantee that every section is open, passable or suitable when you travel. Never bypass a closure or continue simply to complete the route.
